St Juliot Rectory is not only an interesting house it is also the setting for one of the most important romances in literary history. It was here in 1870 that Thomas Hardy stayed, later to become one of England's greatest poets and novelists, and met Emma Gifford, the Rector's sister in law, and there began his ;Cornish romance.'
In later life it served as a catalyst for his poetry, in particular a collection titled The Poems of 1912-1913. The Old Rectory is now a charming bed and breakfast, which lies in the heart of the Valency valley and is situated on the hill two miles from the village of Boscastle.
Unspoilt and beautifully quiet this small bed and breakfast is as much a historical gem as it is a peaceful retreat.
